报告题目Machine Learning Techniques for Brain Signal Analysis

报告人简介:

        Dr Boyu Wang obtain his PhD degree in Computer Science from McGill University. He is currently a postdoctoral associate at Princeton University. His research interests include machine learning, brain signal analysis, and reinforcement learning.

报告摘要:
        The human brain is one of the most complicated biological systems in the world. The brain activities measured by various signals such as electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocorticogram (ECoG), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provide avenues that can help understand the underlying mechanisms of the brain as well as diagnosis brain disorders and the related diseases. However, without the proper techniques to analyze the brain signals, they are of limited value. In this work, we emphasize the role of machine learning techniques in feature extraction and classification of EEG/ECoG signals, where we primarily consider two scenarios: epileptic seizure detection and translation of brain activities into control commands for a brain-computer interface (BCI) system. We first describe the technical challenges from an algorithmic perspective, formulating brain signal analysis as a series of machine learning problems, such as transfer learning, multitask learning, online learning, dimensionality reduction, etc. Then, we propose practical solutions with theoretical justifications to solve these problems.
